Night Shots

It's been awhile since my last post because, for awhile, I couldn't think of a reason for having a blog as well as a facebook page but I found one. Instead of just showcasing shots, which I can do through facebook, I will use it to explain the thought process, intention and technical details of certain shots.

Towards the end of summer, Jeremy, Andrew and I were hanging out at McGirr school. A hangout session became a photoshoot when we discovered that the field was full of deer. Since it was too dark to do anything else, I decided to use a tripod and experiment with long exposures

For this shot I tried to compose the deer as best I could using the rule of thirds, with my subjects (Andrew and Jeremy) between them. Since this is a 30 second exposure my subjects had to stand stock still to avoid motion blur. The deer were also rather statuesque, moving, only slightly, to find a new patch of grass.I didn't expect the street lamp to turn out like it did but it was a fortunate surprise

After that we moved onto more moving shots. For this one, my subjects (Andrew, Jeremy and I) moved every few seconds,in an attempt to create ghost images of ourselves. It worked fairly well, although the background lights obscured the image a bit

This shot was the same principle but my subjects moved only once, in a predetermined path. I really like how it turned out

These are only works in progress. My ISO was way too high, creating unsightly grain and there were a few other technical flaws but I plan to revisit these ideas at a later date.

you can find the rest of the photos from this shoot here:
